Ho titolato il mio libro IL FIGHTER D’ITALIA GIANCARLO GARBELLI.
Il Fighter, è il soprannome con cui Gianni Brera, chiamava Garbelli, già negli ’50, forse la migliore penna italiana dello Sport di sempre. Qua nella didascalia della foto, nel minuto di pausa tra un round e l’altro, quei 60 secondi dove il Fighter raccoglie le idee, i suggerimenti dell’angolo, le informazioni, beve un sorso d’acqua, e intanto tira il fiato…eh già perché IL FIGHTER può essere solo CAMPIONE.
Il mondo è pieno di pugili, ma non di Fighters, e quindi di Campioni. Mio padre, sarebbe morto sul ring piuttosto che abbandonare un match. Ecco cosa vuol dire, nel modo più sintetico ed esplicito essere Il Fighter d’Italia Giancarlo Garbelli.

Sabato scorso, 26 novembre il pugile giamaicano Nicholas Walters ha abbandonato il ring del Cosmopolitan di Las Vegas, alla fine del 7° round, in palio la cintura WBO – World Boxing Organization- dei pesi Super Piuma. Sulla carta è apparso subito come un gran picchiatore, nei suoi 26 match, ne ha messi al tappeto 21!
Ma chi erano i suoi avversari prima di Lomachenko, mi sono chiesta. Già perché il FIGHTER si misura non solo dal suo record, di quello si tira la linea del totale a fine carriera, ma di quali avversari ha affrontato. Si tratta di capire chi sono i due, uomo vs uomo, il valore dell’ uno vs il valore dell’altro, si tratta di riconoscere le abilità che mettono sul ring un atleta e l’ altro.
Con pur l’ eccezionale ucraino Vasyl Lomachenko 28 anni, già due volte medaglia d’oro olimpica, e dal 2013 professionista con soli sette match, Nicholas Walters 30 anni prossimo gennaio, professionista dal 2008, non avrebbe dovuto avere problemi arrivare alla fine del match: vinto, perso o pareggio. Un vero FIGHTER arriva alla fine del match. Se poi ha 8 anni di professionismo, è avvantaggiato nella resistenza a sostenere la lunghezza dei 12 round! Se il pugile è impossibilitato a continuare per qualsiasi motivo, l’angolo chiama il medico a constatare, il quale consiglia o meno a continuare il match, in ultimo l’angolo, che ben conosce il suo atleta, sin nei pensieri… lancia la spugna, in segno di arrestare immediatamente il match per sopraggiunte complicazioni. Se uno dei due contendenti, soffre troppo o è in difficoltà, l’arbitro, il terzo uomo del ring deve intervenire. Sono sempre dalla parte degli atleti che si battono, sempre, senza se e senza ma. La vita dell’atleta è ciò che davvero conta. Nessuno nel mondo della boxe, che ci lavora, che ci vive vuole il peggio per i due contendenti. Nessuno vuole un triste epilogo. Chiarissimo. Ma abbandonare il ring, come ha fatto Walters, senza nessun motivo, ma solo per la frustrazione di non riuscire ad avere la meglio su un così talentato avversario quale si è dimostrato Lomachenko, e non superare l’insoddisfazione cercando di dare tutto sul ring, non è da Fighters, non è da Campioni. E’ da pugili mediocri. Walters, piuttosto che finire al tappeto, si è ritirato. Piuttosto che perdere nei cartellini dei giudici si rifiutato di proseguire nella sfida. Come un qualsiasi bullo, che abbandona, piuttosto che subire una sconfitta. Nessuna organizzazione del livello, direi senz’altro il migliore, come appunto è TOP RANK, di quel mostro dell’organizzazione mondiale entrato ormai nella storia del pugilato, che è Bob Arum, da cinquant’anni sulla piazza internazionale, e che sabato sera ha creato l’ evento per il pubblico, per le TV, per i fans di tutto il mondo, mai più potrà dare ulteriore credito al pugile giamaicano. Nessun altra organizzazione invero.
Nessuno ha obbligato a Nicholas Walter ad intraprendere la carriera pugilistica. Ha avuto un anno per prepararsi. E’ la sua professione. E il pubblico pagante è il suo datore di lavoro, sia nell’arena che gli spettatori TV, radio etc. Ai tempi del mitico Garbelli, i match si disputavano una volta al mese…! Mai e poi mai ha abbandonato un un solo match, dando tutto se stesso sul ring, sino all’ultimo secondo dell’ultimo round. Era amato e lui amava il suo pubblico. Robinson, laMotta, Leonard, Frazier, Ali, Louis, Schmelling, Lewis, Klitschko, Pacquiao, Barrera, Morales, Papp, Monzon, Holyfield, Martinez, Chavez etc…solo per menzionarne qualcuno, nessuno nella storia dei grandi Fighters hanno mai abbandonato il ring. Mai mollato. Pesti, con le budella in subbuglio, costole rotte, le sopraciglia staccate, la vista annebbiata, mai nessuno dei grandi ha abbandonato il ring, se non per ordine medico, dell’angolo e/o fermo dell’arbitro. Fantastico Lomachenko, sabato sera, atleta completo, una star nascente nell’Olimpo dei grandi. Mi ricorda un giovane Pacquiao, quindi prima ancora un giovane Garbelli, a cui ho associato la somiglianza atletica sul ring. Meglio comunque sempre il nostro Garbelli, nessun KO lo ha mai messo al tappeto. Un grandissimo incassatore. Oltre a darle, nella boxe bisogna sapere passare alla cassa, saperle prendere. E’ una capacità rara di pochissimi. Intelligenza e reattività con cui si nasce. Nel mio libro c’è tanto di più di come Giancarlo il Figher d’Italia Garbelli ha fatto scuola con la sua spavalderia: saper dominare e saper incassare. Soffrendo anche, ma senza mollare mai. Sabato scorso, Lomachenko ha mostrato un gioco di gambe eccezionale. Il Garbelli mi diceva, – è mio papà, ma il grande Garbelli è certo lui- appunto: “le gambe nella boxe sono tutto. La potenza, il ritmo tutto nasce dalle gambe.” Che gambe il Garbelli! E che gambe Lomacenko, ritmo sfrenato che hanno mandato in tilt l’avversario. Condizione atletica perfetta. Campioni si nasce, atleti si diventa. L’eccezionalità di questa mistura crea Il Fighter.
Se non sai accettare i verdetti di evidente superiorità del tuo avversario, la boxe non è per te. Hai perso ogni altra occasione per essere migliore del tuo antagonista di quella sera e così di avere altre notti di opportunità e di confronto, altre chance di vincere o di perdere o di pareggiare. Nella boxe pro, le borse si guadagnano e Nicholas Walters, che ha scelto questa professione, ben lo sa. Non si può ingannare il pubblico pagante che è lì per ammirare una grande sfida, così tutta l’ organizzazione, il proprio angolo, senza motivo reale, vero.
I soldi nel pugilato, nella grande Boxe si g u a d a g n a n o così come il rispetto si c o n q u i s t a. Così è l’ Arte della Vittoria. Dice mio Padre: “se non sai soffrire non conti nulla nel pugilato, così anche nella vita in generale.”
Fighter vuol dire: Combattente, Guerriero, Colui che non si ferma davanti a nessun ostacolo, anzi l ‘ ostacolo è la motivazione per essere meglio, questo è il pensiero vincente di mio Padre. Non è da tutti, ma lui certo ispirato è nato per il talento della boxe, ed è questo il suo verbo, la sua eredità. Giancarlo Garbelli grande Campione, tra i grandissimi nel mondo, 99 match, 74 vinti, 11 pari, non è mai andato al tappeto. E certo sarebbe morto nel ring piuttosto che mollare! E’ di questa materia che sono fatti i grandi Fighters della Boxe. Merce rara…! Ecco perché per il mio libro non ho scelto la solita copertina in posa da pugile, bello era un gran bel tipo, fisico scolpito il Garbelli, ma troppo ovvio utilizzarlo nella copertina, invece ho preferito la foto proprio dove si comprende tutta l’ essenza del suo essere IL FIGHTER D’ITALIA, di colui che ha sempre dato tutto sul ring, che ha sacrificato tutto se stesso, sino allo spasmo da VERO COMBATTENTE, da GRANDISSMO CAMPIONE, appunto IL FIGHTER D’ITALIA GIANCARLO GARBELLI. Sembra un dipinto sacro. Di questo si tratta nel mio libro e ancora tanto di più. Ah Campioni così sono merce di rara bellezza!

The world is full of boxers, but not Fighters, not Champions. My father, he would die in the ring rather than abandon, quite the fight. Here’s what it means, in the most concise and explicit way be Il Fighter d’Italia Giancarlo Garbelli.

Last Saturday, November 26 the Jamaican boxer Nicholas Walters left the ring at the Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas, at the end of the 7th round, on stake the WBO belt – World Boxing Organization- Super Feather weight. But who were his opponents before Lomachenko, I wondered. The FIGHTER is measured not only by his record of what you pull the total line at the end of career, but which opponents he faced. It’s about to understand who are the two, man vs. man, the value of one vs the other’s value, it’s about to recognize the skills that put an athlete in the ring and so the other one.
With even the outstanding Ukrainian Vasyl Lomachenko 28 years, already a two-time Olympic gold medalist, and since 2013 professional with just seven matches, Nicholas Walters 30 years next January, a professional since 2008, who should not have problems get to the end of the fight: win, lose or draw. A real FIGHTER will end the fight. After 8 years as professional, Walters has an advantage in the lasting of 12-round lengths! If the boxer is unable to continue for any reason, the corner calls the doctor to see what’s happen, he recommends whether or not to continue the fight, in the last, the corner, and acquainted that know his athlet in any of his thoughts, since to throw … the towel, as a sign to immediately stop the fight due to emerging complications. If one of the two contenders, suffers too much or is in trouble, the referee, the third man in the ring must intervene. I’m always on the side of the athletes who are fighting, always, no ifs, ands or buts. The athlete’s life is what really matters. No one in the world of boxing, who works there, who lives there wants the worst for the two contenders. Nobody wants a sad ending. It’s very clear. But leave the ring, as did Walters, for no reason, but only for the frustration of not being able to get the better of such a talented opponent who proved to be Lomachenko, and do not exceed the dissatisfaction trying to give everything in the ring, it doesn’t belong to Fighters, is not Champions way to ending a fight, but just mediocre boxers do. Nicholas Walters, rather than ending up on the mat, he retired. Rather than losing in the judges cards he refused to continue the challenge. Like any bully, abandoning, rather than suffer defeat. No organization level, I would say definitely the best, as it is this TOP RANK, the world organization monster now entered in boxing history, which Bob Arum founded, and for fifty years on the international market, and last saturday night has created the event for the public, for TV, for fans around the world, never again will give further credence to the Jamaican boxer. No other organization indeed. Nobody forced to Nicholas Walter to pursue a boxing career. He has had a year to prepare. It is his profession. The paying public is his supporting, the arena as TV viewers, radio etc. At the time of the mythical Garbelli time, the fight were tearing once a month …! He never gave up a one fight, giving all of himself in the ring until the last second of the last round. He was loved and he loved his fans. Robinson, LaMotta, Leonard, Frazier, Ali, Louis, Schmelling, Lewis, Klitschko, Pacquiao, Barrera, Morales, Papp, Monzon, Holyfield, Martinez, Chavez etc … just to mention a fews, no one in the history of the great Fighters have never left the ring. Never quite. Beated, with guts in turmoil, broken ribs, loose eyebrows, blurred sight, never none of the great Fighter left the ring, if not for medical order, or the corner and / or referee stopped.
Saturday night, fantastic Lomachenko, complete athlete, a rising star in the Olympus of the greats. It reminds me of a young Pacquiao, before a young Garbelli, to which I associated the similarity as athlet in the ring. The best still always Garbelli, none could KO him down to the mat. A great taker. In addition to his great boxing style, he knew how to take. It’s a rare capacity of few. Intelligence and reactivity, he was born with. In my book there is so much more about how Il Figher d’Italia Giancarlo Garbelli, schooled on with his swagger: to know how to dominate and be able to take. Also suffering, never giving up, never quite. Last Saturday, Lomachenko showed exceptional footwork. Garbelli told me, – it’s my Dad, but the great Garbelli is certain him-: “the legs are everything in boxing. The power, the rhythm everything comes from the legs.” What a legs Garbelli had! And what legs Lomachenko has, frantic swing that upset his opponent. Athlet in perfect condition. Champions are born, they becomes athletes. The exceptional nature of this mixture creates The Fighter.
If you cannot accept the verdicts of obvious superiority of your opponent, boxing is not for you. Nicholas Walters, lost every other opportunity to be better than his antagonist last evening and so have other nights of opportunity and confrontation, other chances to win or lose or draw. In pro boxing, the purse are earned and Nicholas Walters, who chose this profession, knows it well. You can not fool the public that paying to see you, to admire you, and so the whole organization, you corner, without real reason. The money in boxing, the great Boxing are g a i n e d, as well as the respect is c o n q u e r. So, it’s the Art of Victory. My Father says: ” in boxing, if you can’t suffer, you don’t count, also in life in general.”
Fighter means: Warrior, Combatant one who doesn’t stop at nothing, even the obstacle is the motivation to be better, that’s the winning thought of my father. Not for everyone, but he certainly was born inspired by his boxing talent, and these are his words, his legacy. Giancarlo Garbelli great champion, among the greatest in the world, 99 fights, 74 wins, 11 draws, never went down in KO. Certainly he would die in the ring rather than quite! This is the matter that are made the Greatest Boxing Fighters. Rare materials …! I must have already written, I repeat: yes, Boxing Champion is born not made! That’s why for my book I did not choose the usual cover posing boxers photo, Giancarlo was handsome a fascinating guy, a great physic. It was too obvious to use as cover, instead I preferred the picture just where is it clear understandable the whole essence of himself, being THE FIGHTER OF ITALY, the one who always gave everything in the ring, all of himself, until the spasm. TRUE FIGHTER, real great CHAMPION, precisely IL FIGHTER D’ITALIA GIANCARLO GARBELLI. The cover looks like a sacred painting. This is in my book and much morer. Ah well, yes Champions are products of rare beauty!
